Much has been made of the new wave of contemporary art coming from China, echoing as much of it does the social frictions arising from the move from the ancient classical traditions of China, its recent revolutionary history, and its arrival as a market economy and a world leader amongst nations. Old issues of morality, ethics and the comradeship of a communist background have given way partly to greed, capitalism and a sense of disquiet amongst many of the direction the nation is taking. Many contemporary artists also, previously unused to individual expressionism, have displayed a pent up aggresiveness in new found freedoms in social upheavals quite unique. Other artists stick to traditional themes, while others experiment or try to master Western techniques such as oils and watercolors.
