Given that the Chinese ski scene is less than phenomenal, is it really worth it to fly to one of the slopes to ski? I mean, if you're talking about a day trip from Beijing, I understand, but otherwise, aren't you better off saving up and heading to the States or Europe?

skiing in other provinces
If you go to Jilin or Heilongjiang, there is the possibility of taking a flight, but you can also go by train. Less expensive and nowadays also from the time more acceptable. The train to Haerbin takes aroudn 11 hours, much better than a few years ago when I had a ride with 17 hours up to Haerbin and 30 hours train ride back to Beijing. So it was a total of 47 hours train ride for 20 hours skiing...
The great option is to go to Wanlong or the brand new Dolomiti ski resort, both near Zhangjiakou / Hebei. The slopes and facilities are at least as good as in Dongbei or even better (Dolomiti with a 6 place chairlift with bubble)and all it takes is a 4.5 hour bus ride from Beijing. Check out our website www.hiddenchina.net where we will place soon dates of skiing trips with rates.
If you want to ski on natural snow, then the only option is away from China. Japan and Korea are the closest one, but a ski trip abroad can quickly get quite expensive.
All the best

Ski China
Can I just say that issue is the coolest EVER and although we're still a little ways off my friends and I are already planning trips. Hey this is way rad and we're gonna ski Zhonghua this year!!! Planning Harbin - any suggestions where to stay in Russiaville?
Places to stay in Harbin
The Holiday Inn downtown in Harbin is decent. It is right next to the main shopping street and not too far from the train station. Shangri-La is high end but closer to the main ice fesival locations on the other side of the river. Of course there are numerous others that you can check out on a travel site like Elong.com.
