Choosing a City to Live in

I am planning on moving to China in November, but I don't have much of a plan. What cities are the best to live in? How do I go about choosing one? My Chinese is minimal. Is that a problem?

In winter

It depends a bit on how long you'll be here. If it's just for the winter, then go south, brother. Kunming or Xiamen would be good bets.

Are you just hanging out or looking for jobs too? Teaching? Other?

If you're staying a longer time Nanjing or Chongqing could be interesting if you want to skip out of Beijing and Shanghai. It really depends on your plan.

My Plan

My plan is pretty minimal. I may end up teaching, but not necessarily. I just left my job after 8 years, so I have a bit of a severance package and no great need to work to soon. I just want something fun.

But I'm really worried about the language problem. Can you get around without speaking Chinese? What cities are the best for this? I guess Beijing and Shanghai, but if I can get by other places without it I would prefer that.

Language

I have traveled through China and lived in Taiwan. I really wouldn't be too nervous about the language problem. I amazed myself with how quickly I adapted to it, most people have similar experiences. Restaurants in the larger cities usually have english menues and if not, then just point. It usually isnt too hard to find someone who speaks some english when you need it. And of course you will learn some mandarin there.

moving to China

I to want to move to china, My Chinese wife and our two year old daughter are a little concerned about living in south Africa where the crime is so bad and the quality of live for my daughter while she grows up will always be allot less here in south Africa than if we move to china, so we to want to move to china. my wife says that Fujian might be a good place to settle down but I've been told that Fujian is not the best place, so my question is where would be the best place to raze my daughter?
