Lhasa & Xigase

I'm off to Tibet mid-August and I haven't been there for a couple of years. I remember the bar at the Yak Hotel in Lhasa at the Tibetan end of the city nearer to Jokhang was neat, is it still there ? Any other ideas also where to hang out both in Lhasa and Xigase ? Doing some trekking and researching tibetexpat.com...

Lhasa Xigase

Dear Chris

You probably know it through your travel agent, at the moment it's a big mess in Tibet. The road to Kathmandu is closed until at least 20 August and I heard that they stopped issuing permits to Zangmu and Everest BC. I dont know how it looks for permits further to the West, when going to Kailash or Guge ruins.
Train tickets are a big hassle to get, so better fly to Lhasa. An option is take the train back to Xining and then flight.

If you want an alternative and if you are well equipped and adventurous, there are plenty of opportunities in Western Sichuan (especially around sigunyangshan - 4 sister mountain). However, it's most important to trek with at least 2 people and GPS is a must.
In the whole western Sichuan area there are plenty of great treks waiting to be discovered and summits to be first climbed.

Have fun!
Christoph
