I've been trying to improve my Chinese by watching local TV, but the options are pretty bad. Qing dynasty dramas are all well and good, but they are that exciting. Soap operas seem to be the best option for a few reasons. First they are easy to follow. The conversations aren't that complicated and the stories are mostly the same. Second, the over-the-top emotion that the stars show is both hillarious and helpful in converying the meaning. Are there particularly good ones? When is there going to be a Chinese version of the office? Would it be bad because the boss character would just seem like a normal Chinese laoban?

good idea
Soaps are definitely the way to go. Sitcoms are okay here too, but the laugh tracks are so loud that it accentuates how bad the jokes are. At least with soap operas they are bad on their own and don't have extra emphasis.
Boy meets girl. Girl falls madly in love with boy. Boy decides he loves another girl (girl runs off screen flailing and crying). Other woman ends up being evil.
Stir. Repeat.
Korea soap operas aren't much better, but since they're all dubbed, you can use them as a substitute.
I studied using a soap opera
I studied using a soap opera called '别了,温哥华' (Vancouver)which was pretty easy to understand and kind of entertaining (in a melodramatic, trashy way). As good as any I've seen, anyway! Cute girls and guys getting up to mischief in Canada.
