Do good art house movies come to China? I mean, I know they are all available on illegal DVDs, but what if I want to go to the movie theater? Are there places to go in the big cities?

You won't find much outside of the biggest cities, but then again that's everywhere. There used to be a place Cherry Lane Films somewhere outside of the Third Ring Road in Beijing, but someone will have to tell me if it's still around.

It's really pretty good. A lot of times they bring in the film makers to take questions after the showing which can make it worth it even if you end up with a film that's a bit of a dud.

What options are there outside of Beijing? You know, for those of who...don't live in Beijing...
Indie film scene
The Indie scene in China is really picking up steam, but sometimes I worry that it's just aiming at the foreign crowd. The art scene has done well, but aren't they just putting out crap that appeals to the foreign 'intelligentsia'? I mean, if I see one more brightly colored 'ironic' mao-era looking fat guy in a painting do something capitalistic I'm going t puke. I get it, 'communist' china isn't that communist. now can you sell me something good?
I just fear the film industry might succumb to the same issues.
