Why Does Chinese Liquor Taste So Bad ?

This goes hand in hand with the "avoiding ganbei" thread.

Baijui IS gross. As is the ganbei routine. I think the reason for this is more genetic actually. 90% of Westerners possess a gene that breaks down alcohol. 90% of Asians do not. Now I don't know the evolutionary reasons for that (maybe someone else does), but it does mean that in the west, strong spirits have evolved and become more refined. We drink them over a longer period, savour the taste, and can handle consumption of alcohol spread out over an entire evening.

Accordingly, if we're going to be drinking booze for several hours, it'd better taste good. And expensive whiskies, brandies and whatever else certainly do ! In China however, matters are rather different. The Chinese drink - specifically to get drunk. Ganbei-ing, all that liquor goes straight to the head, faces turn red, eyes water and suddenly they start getting carried out of the room, semi-concious. You don't need a particularly refined liquor to do that, if the aim is to prove machismo or friendship when the stated goal is oblivion.

However I would have to also concede that the art of drinking specifically to get spectacualy plastered, Chinese style, is far more deliberately macho than sipping a whisky over several hours is.

Soju

The real shame is that Korean soju is about as cheap as crappy baijiu and yet infinitely better. Wouldn't you think that while China was in a parent-state relationship with Korea at some point a Chinese guy would have been having some soju with a Korean guy and said "Hey this is a lot better than the [大便] that we drink. Maybe we should drink this instead."

Guess not.

Nice touch

Thank you for describing the drink as being fecal matter. I guess in Chinese it sounds better (?)

Anyway, I've heard this rumor that a lot of Asians can't break down the alcohol, but it's a lot less than 90% that get red faces--maybe 25%. Plus people always say Chinese are all lactose intolerant but everywhere I go people are eating ice cream. How does that work?

You think Chinese ice cream

You think Chinese ice cream is made from milk ?

?

Chinese ice cream isn't made from milk? What's it made from?

BTW- the only good rice of sorghum liquor out there is the stuff from Yunnan. Of course, it's way too sweet to have more than a shot or two, but at least you can put it down!

alcohol

Well like all Chinese stuff it is bad....they may have a lot of technology and advances but the products are bad quality
