Japanese Whiskey

I'm Scottish so thsi is a bit of a step for me to take, but I'm getting converted. Especially after I found out it was a Scot who transfered the technology and started making it there. Mongolia even has a special blend from Speyside Distillers named "Yokozuna" named after the ex-Sumo world champion (who was Mongolian - see the "Jeep" issue of Mongolia Expat at www.mongoliaexpat.com). and it's pretty good stuff. Even the British Ambassador drinks it. I have a bottle of Suntory at home, and thats been getting good reviews from my house guests...any other thoughts on Jap whiskey or places in China that specialise or stock it ? I seem to recall a bar in Shanghai that had a selction and I need to get down there and arrange a tasting...

I don't know if I should

I don't know if I should debate with a Scot about whisky, but for me Suntory just doesn't have much of a pedigree. Does anyone drink it outside of Japan? I know they sponsor golf tournaments but that is just part of their Japanese marketing strategy.

In Japan, drinking Suntory developed as a brand by promoting the spirit as a cheap way to experience a sophisticated foreign drink. The film Lost in Translation was inspired by Francis Ford Coppola doing cheesy ads for Suntory, in fact.

Nowadays it seems the Japanese mainly drink Scottish whiskies, and I think they would be rather surprised to see a Scot with a bottle of Suntory. Personally, I would use it to help light my barbeque but not much else.

Suntory beer, on the other hand, is in my opinion superior to Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo.....
