Trip in December

My parents are coming in December and I wanted to take them somewhere 1. warm and 2 that they have not been before. Any creative ideas in China?

Yunnan

I'd go to Yunnan or Guanxi. Hainan is an option too.

Xinshuanbanna

I'd plump for Yunnan like the Geezer says. South Yunnan, Xinshuanbanna, close to the border with Laos. Sanya in Hainan is OK, but is a bit commercial, and gets very busy. Xinshuanbanna has more enthic culture (the Dao and Miao minorities), elephants and peacocks. My Beijing office went there last Christmas on their company annual trip, I'll see if we can get some pictures up here for you to see...

Xishuangbanna

I had heard it was a good place. I'm considering going into Vietnam afterward, so that should work out well.

Come to Hainan! We live here

Come to Hainan! We live here and love it!

so what's so good?

You seem pretty exciting...so sell me. What's so good about it?

Hainan

Isn't Hainan super hot all the time?

I once had a friend who bet someone that he could stand in the Hainan sun for 25 minutes without getting burned. And he lost and it was painful.

Are things really that bad down there?

Hainan...

I've been considering Hainan, but my biggest concern is that it would essentially be a beach trip. I know there are a lot of minority groups in the area, but what kind of cultural stuff is there to do specifically. My parents really like to dive in and would not simply want to sit on the beach and tan...

Sanya is nice enough, but it

Sanya is nice enough, but it gets very busy and is all about...sitting on the beach. I've stayed at the Gloria Plaza Resort there which is good, but Sanya is really all about beaches and water sports - jet ski's, parasailing, that kinda stuff. There is some scuba, but it's not that fantastic, the China Sea is too shallow there for anything interesting.

If your parents want culture at that time of year, well what about Lijiang, or Yangshuo ? Cooler weather but very beautiful.

Xiamen

I think a really nice place to go at that time of the year is Xiamen. It's a gorgeous city that is a bit under-appreciated with lots of history. The weather should be quite nice and I suspect they have never been.

Xiamen IS nice it's true.

Xiamen IS nice it's true. Great sea food and looonng beaches. And Gulangyu Island is pretty. The best bars are all to the left of the Marco Polo Hotel....good call Jynce.

Xishuangbanna

I visited Xishuangbanna (flying into Jinghong) around Christmas 2004. My partner was Chinese. The weather was certainly pleasant, although there didn't seem to be much available in the way of individual / independent tours available. Most visitors were domestic Chinese on whirlwind package tours.

After we flew back to Kunming, the sky was very overcast and the temperature in the capital city was about 5 degrees celsius. I lived in Yunnan Province for the best part of two years. With the exception of Xishuangbanna (towards the Myanmar / Laos borders), the weather in Yunnan Province tends to turn rather chilly after the National Day week ends early October each year.

If you've got someone who can speak Chinese, then perhaps you might consider jumping on a Chinese tour. They're usually great value. Decide which parts (if any) which you may want to leave out.

Cheers
