These are I think my favorites: Centro - long term VIP card member (good deal - if you go there on a regular basis you'd get the outlay back pretty quickly on discounts, plus they have a once a month members only evening with free booze) Face - different from Face Shanghai, but a class act, and now the summer is coming I shall be sitting outside with a glass of Reisling... HouHai - take your pick. It's just great to wander about and sit out by the lake. Stoneboat - new and excellent. Live band and a neat ambience. Love it. Lan. Actually I was joking. Phillip Starck must have been od-ing on methadone when he decorated that disaster. Urghh. No thanks. For Beijing updates, whats new and hot, where the best cocktails are and the longest happy hours can be obtained, this is cool: www.beijingboyce.com

Bars are too Loud
But Centro, Face, and Stoneboat are nice. Centro is too corporate but it does have Beijing's most reliable cocktails.
You might also check the new Obi Wan Club on the north shore of Houhai.
Otherwise, Nanluoguxiang is the current "place to be" in Beijing. Not really bars, but you can find identical bars anywhere else in the world too - more or less.
One more
Obi Wan is a good call. You're right, Centro is corporate, but that also makes it an ideal place to entertain clients.
Q Bar also has a great outside area in summer.
Just thought I'd throw that in.
Q Bar is obviously also very
Q Bar is obviously also very good for cocktails - perhaps even better than Centro.
There's also Bed - good for its design. A couple bottles of 78 kuai house wine at Cafe La Poste would be a good evening with a couple friends.
Have any of you guys heard of Nanjie? People tell me that is where the real luminaries prowl.
Is it a street?
Street or a bar?
A wild paradise
I meant the bar. A visit there will yield pleasures previously unimagined - or so I have heard.
Pleasures previosuly
Pleasures previosuly unimagined - what - like wikipedia being available online ?
Obi Wan Club
What's the deal with this place? I've heard a lot of people recommend it, but what's so special about it?
Q BAR CHARITY EVENT THURSDAY
Speaking of Q Bar, there's a charity event to raise money for the children of migrant workers this thursday (June 14) at 8PM. If you've never been there it's about 300 meters south of bookworm on the top floor of the Eastern Hotel.
100RMB gets you a drink and entrance (it's charity).
Event
That event was really great, and for an excellent cause. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!
Bell and Drum
Bell and Drum is (duh) between the Bell and Drum Towers in the general area of Houhai. It's a pretty cool place with a roofdeck and views of the structures. I'm always afraid the roof might cave in, but the drinks are reasonable, so it's worth the risk!
Nanjie
Isn't nanjie that kind of dumpy place that's about to get CHAI'ed over by chunxiu lu? I think they even sell "拆" tee-shirts which are pretty funny.
Or is it the place next door to that?
Kokomo
Another nice spot with a roofdeck. Worth a look.
Altruistic Alcoholics
They had a pretty good party at Kokomo Saturday with 20% of purchases going to charity.
Kokomo is behind 3.3 by the way, just above China Doll
Xihai Area
What are the best spots around Xihai or the Lama Temple area?
Aria
Aria is the China New World building is always a good bet too. It's a little upscale and stuffy but they have great happy hour deals and a mini buffet for free.
Beijing Bars
It's hard to beat Q Bar for cocktails, but you're best off getting there earlier than later. They make great Martinis and Manhattans. I also brought in a cocktail book so they'd add the Alphonso Special to their repertoire - gin, Grand Marnier, sweet and dry vermouth, and bitters.
Thanks for the shout, Chris

The Rickshaw
Classy it is not, but it isn't scummy either. Just north of the Bookworm you can have some fun there. It's a bit loud at times but the Burritos are pretty good...for Mexican in China.
