Eating Panda in Guilin

Years ago I was in Guilin with some Chinese friends, and we were having dinner in one of the local restaurants by the River Li. I recall the small, locally caught fried river fish where very good, as was the Osmanthus Flower wine. Anyway, they served this other dish, and it had this light pinkish sliced meat in it, mixed up with a creamy vegetable sauce, celery and lotus bulbs. It was pretty delicious, and I asked what it was. There was much discussion about this in Chinese, until they replied to me "Chris, we don't know the name of the animal in English, but we can describe it for you. It's black, and white, and lives in the jungle and eats bamboo". I nearly fell off my chair. Then they said "The chef says he has another one in the kitchen if you want to see it". So I did. And there, in a cage, in the kitchen at the back of the restaurant was this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo_rat

Wiki Blocked

Wikipedia is blocked in China. I take it that from the web address that it was a rat? Although the description obviously implies a panda...

The Chinese censors really

The Chinese censors really are ridiculous at times. OK, try this: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/accounts/pictures/Rhizomys.ht...

The one in the cage looked rather nicer, pure white coat and a long black tail. But for a minute there when they described it...black, white, lives in the jungle and eats bamboo....

So basically..

You ate a rat. Thanks pretty gross, although I guess eating a panda would have been pretty sad.

Yes, but it was a bamboo

Yes, but it was a bamboo rat. They live in the jungle and eat bamboo. Not to be confused with this: http://www.punk77.co.uk/groups/Stranglersrattus.htm
