I'm planning on opening up a restaurant catering to foreigners and I wanted to find out if I should find a local Chinese partner or go it alone. I've heard so many stories of foreigners building up a business and then getting forced out by their partners that I'm very anxious about spending a lot of my own money on something that could go bad. However, I feel like having a business-savvy local might help me with issues that I had never thought of.
If people have either first or second hand knowledge of how this works I'd be very eager to hear your input. Whatever advice you have, large or small would be greatly welcomed.

I'm not exactly an expert on this, but let me give you my thoughts for what they're worth:
If you choose a Chinese partner, make sure it's a
a. someone you really trust, or
b. set up in a way so that you hold some of the information critical to the business so that they could not operate effectively without you.
I also saw this post on the site a while back. I can't vouch for them, but I've heard of them before and they are supposed to have a good reputation from what I know.

I think it's best to go it alone unless the Chiense partner have something really tangible to offer. For a restaurant these are no inexpensive for foreigners to obtain a licence for - so why the need to have a Chinese partner when you can instead hire someone to help you. You can fire an employee, it's very tough to get rid of a partner. Having a JV Partner is more suitable these days for larger businesses where the Chinese side can bring in real assets such as land, work force, financing or strategic assets such as supply chains and so on. For SMEs I'd tend to go it alone.
