I have some friends coming to travel around China in June. We're trying to put together an itinerary and are trying to figure out where we can go from Xi'an before Chengdu. We figure we'll have two days.
I would not find going away from the big cities and tourist sites since we'll be doing a lot of that anyway. Are there any hiking places either near Xi'an or Chengdu? Is it worth it to go to Chongqing. I was planning on skipping it because I heard it's not that interesting but if people have been there and liked it I could give it a shot.

Leshan
Hmmmm...no ideas right around Xi'an, but if you're going to Chengdu, you could go a day early and head down to the big buddha in Leshan. It's basically a day trip and it's worth it despite all the tourists. Actually the area is pretty big and aside from the Buddha the monastery is really nice and there is a lot of climbing and hiking to be done in it. Most Chinese don't go beyond the Buddha so the crowds petter out a bit as you travel around.
Not sure if you were already planning on going to see the Buddha, but if you're not you might want to consider it. It's...I dunno...3 hours by bus or cab from Chengdu.
Have a great trip!
Go to Chengdu early!
I'm pretty biased but you should definitely head out to CD a few days early. You can take a trip out to Zhongdian or Zhuzaigou (spelling?). Leshan is probably worth a trip too.
Chengdu's also got a lot of clubs and stuff like that if you're into that scene. Nothing beats the comedy of watching guys in fishnet sleeveless shirts. Besides, the music tends to be okay, and the clubs in CD are huge, I mean really big.
The weather has also turned pretty nice so you can just have some beers at the tables restaurants set up on the sidewalk.
Basically I'm saying there are a lot of options down here.
Near Xi'an
Since when is Chengdu near Xi'an. Just take a map and head out for a hike. It's more fun flying blind anyway.
Mount Hua Shan - (Xi'an)
Mt. Hua Shan is one of the five best-known mountains in China. Located 120 kms (3 hours drive) east of Xi'an with an elevation of 220 m, you should be able to jump on a small tour bus for around Y310 per person (including entrance fee) for the day.
Very pleasant indeed. Nothing too arduous to endure. Check hotels etc for more tour details.
better than blind
Actually Wocca's way sounds better than flying blind...
