Those worm things

Does anyone know what those insects that look like thick worms are that you see being cooked on the street? They look fairly unappealing, but if anyone has tried them, I'm always open to try something new if people say it's worth it.

They're cocooned silk worms

They're cocooned silk worms I suspect. Actually quite tasty, a little nutty in flavour. Give them a try !

Weird Chinese Food at HouHai Lake in Beijing

Anyone been up the end of Silk Lane, past all the bars, to the corner, just before you turn right to walk along the lake until the stone bridge ? There is a stall there selling strange yet traditional Chinese snacks. These include: Steamed silkworms on sticks, Fried Scorpions, Fried sea horses, wok fried water beetles...I'm not sure about the sea horses, but I tried the others and they were OK...

Freak me out

You can tell me they're good, but they still look gross to me. I'll give em a try though.

Not too bad

I have to say, I will most likely never eat them again, but the taste wasn't too bad. I'm a texture man though, and that was hard to get past. It can be the greatest flavor ever, but if the texture freaks me out, it's not a relationship that will work.

I was shown a huge bamboo

I was shown a huge bamboo box of them at Spring Festival one year by my then girlfriends uncle, who was from Liaoning. They were still fresh, alive, in brown cocoons and wriggling like Kylies buttcheeks. Later, they were steamed, and Uncle and I devoured the whole lot while getting shitfaced on Qingdao beer. He was a cool guy, worked for the railways and had been all over China. Silkworms are cool man. And Water Beetles. Ever read "Papillon" ?

What's Papillon?

Taste is one thing, and I do my best to try unusual things, but I'm still working up the courage for silkworms...

Chicken Feet & Duck's Tongue

Though generally considered to be a Chinese delicacy, it is chicken feet that I can not really develop a craving for. It's probably the thought of gnawing through those very thin bones that turns me off the most. And, the flesh is pretty hard to get to through the skin.

Anyone tried duck tongue with the sinew or whatever still attached from the back of the bird's throat? Comes wrapped and sealed in foil, and reportedly retails for 160RMB ($US20) per kg. Somewhat ghastly to my senses of smell and taste, but a sure-fire winner for Chinese friends.

Not afraid to say it

I've tried silk worms. They are not good. but they make nice clothes.

Are they the stinky ones?

Something always stinks when I see those silk worms out, but I have no idea if that's what it is. There are also so many different things being cooked up that it's hard to tell.

Anyone know what stinks?

Squishy=unappealing

I just don't think I can give them a try. I'm pretty adventurous, but they give me the willies.
