Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province, China's large southern island off the coast of Guangdong and close to Vietnam. Haikou is on the Northern coast facing the mainland just across the Qiongzhou Straits and is connected to the Port of Xuwen on the mainland by regular ferry services. It's population is 500,000. It has been known as a port since the Song period about a thousand years ago and is still today a major port and traffic hub through which much of the islands (mainly fruit and rubber produce) exits through to the mainland.
