First Snow Of The Year
The ubermeister at ChinaExpat Towers here always runs a sweepstake in the office to predict the first snow fall of the new winter. It’s a big spread; he tells and shows photos of Beijing three years ago when an early icy breath of Siberia caused Beijings’ air temperatures to plummet 20 degrees in four hours, and dump several inches of snow across the city in just a few hours in the middle of November. Then again, the following year, when Beijing’s natural position in a plain surrounded on three sides by mountains protected the city and not a flake fell. So this year, the spread of diarized possibilities has extended from early November right the way through to the middle of January – a 60 day window. Today though, snow has fallen, and China Expat has the winning ticket. You have to get money from your boss somehow, and snow seems a neat way to do it.
